Leavenworth was officially incorporated on September 5, 1906. A small timber community, it transformed itself into a mock Bavarian village in the late 1960's to revitalize its economy. Every year in November the downtown area is decked out in Christmas lights until the season ends in mid-January with a fireworks display. Nearby Icicle Creek serves as the northern border of the popular Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area.
